Which Nursing Degree Will Maximize My Nursing Career Choices?
I’m often asked these questions: - “Which nursing degree will maximize my nursing career choices?”
- “Do I need a Masters in Nursing to have my own nursing business?”
- “Do I need a string of nursing degrees behind my name?”
There are several variables involved in the answers to these questions. Remember, your nursing expertise and the needs of your clientele will influence your educational pursuits.
Associate Degree in Nursing If your nursing career choices are strictly clinical, an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) will get you in the door. This is a good choice if you are limited in both funds and time. You will be able to earn RN wages while you advance your nursing level to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). ADN programs are usually through community colleges. These are much less expensive than universities or four year nursing programs. Check for transfer requirements to four year nursing programs. Use the ADN program as a stepping stone to more versatile nursing degrees.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing The BSN is preferred in most places and is often compensated for financially. It is very important that both the Associate and Bachelor be in Nursing …from National League of Nursing (NLN) accredited programs. If you are interested in creating your own nursing business then a BSN is a minimum. Many nurse entrepreneurs and consultants, including myself, are successful with no more than a BSN. It is your expertise and business sense that will create the success….not necessarily an advanced nursing degree. The management and leadership focus in the BSN program will greatly increase your business management and decision making skills. The curriculum is essential to professional nursing.
Masters of Science in Nursing If your nursing career choices take you to educating RNs, then a Masters will add credibility to your expertise. It is recommended that your Masters be a Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN). A related field, however, is often acceptable. The only exception would be if you wanted to teach in a nursing program. For that you would need a MSN from a NLN accredited program. Research any nursing programs you consider. Make sure they are credible and NLN accredited. Don’t take shortcuts.
Online Nursing Degree There are many quality programs offering an online nursing degree. You will need to already be an RN to enter these online programs. Some may require additional clinical experience with a preceptor. These online programs can be a great option for the nurse who has a busy schedule, allowing them to schedule studies between family and work. Make sure they are accredited. Check out options for
online nursing degrees.
Certification/Credentialing Another option in building your nursing career is to consider Certification or Credentialing in a nursing specialty. This is usually obtained after special training, up to two years experience in the nursing specialty and testing of specialty knowledge and clinical expertise. Examples would be Certified Legal Nurse Consultant and Certified Wound Care Nurse. Many Certification programs are available online.
Main Components of Nursing Career Choices Most of the nursing career choices presented in NursingCareerHub.com can be built with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The main components of your nursing career choices are: - Presenting yourself as an expert, and
- Fulfilling a need for your clientele.
Of course, a higher nursing degree wouldn’t hurt either.
